Farmington, an 1816 Federal-style house in Louisville, topic for historical society meeting

Jim Coursey will give the talk on Tuesday, April 7.

The next meeting of the Christian County Historical Society — at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7 — will feature a presentation on Farmington, an 1816 Federal-style house in Louisville. Jim Coursey will give the lecture.

The residence was built for John and Lucy Speed, and the design was inspired by Thomas Jefferson, according to a Kentucky Historical Marker. It was originally part of a 550-acre hemp plantation and opened as a historic site in 1959. Abraham Lincoln, a close friend of John and Lucy Speed’s son, Joshua Speed, visited Farmington for a weeks’ long stay in 1841.

Coursey’s talk is open to the public. Membership in the society is not required to attend.

Meetings of the Christian County Historical Society are on the first Tuesday of the month, September through April, at 306 E. Ninth St.
