The Human Rights Commission will present awards during an Aug. 2 event to community members "whose service, leadership, faith, and dedication have made a lasting impact on the Hopkinsville-Christian County."

The group is currently reading “Salvation: Black People and Love.”

Organizers decided on the venue change because of the forecast for rain.

The Friends of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library is organizing the 1920s themed event on Aug. 28.

Local observances begin with a Pennyrile Area Community Band concert on Thursday and continue with a big fireworks show Saturday at the fairgrounds.

Historic preservationist Grace Abernethy will lead the program at Hopkinsville Brewing Co.

The group’s first concert will be on Saturday, June 20, at the Alhambra Theatre.

Slated Sept. 11-12, the downtown festival will feature four outdoor concerts, dozens of food trucks, community booths and children's activities.

The bell hooks Book Club meets monthly at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. The next meeting is June 15.

Heejung Park, the group's director, said, “We are creating a space where musicians and audiences come together to experience the power of live music ... that is accessible, inspiring and uniquely Hopkinsville.”

The Hopkinsville fair, celebrating its 75th edition, will culminate with a fireworks show on the 250th anniversary of America's independence.

The free concerts are set June 30 and July 2.
