An evening stroll through Riverside Cemetery on Friday, Oct. 17, will focus on three things — the symbolism of old headstones, stories of people laid to rest there and identification of trees in the cemetery.
The cemetery tour is organized by the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and the Christian County Masters Gardeners. The tour starts at 4 p.m. It will cover less than 1 mile and last about 90 minutes.
“This Tree Week Tour is offered as part of the Urban Forest Initiative, a collaborative group of University of Kentucky and Kentucky community stakeholders whose purpose is to promote and protect the urban tree canopy on the UK campus and throughout the region,” event organizers said in a press release. “The group strives to raise awareness of the ecological, social, and economic benefits provided by urban trees.”
The tour group will meet at the Latham Mausoleum, which guests will find straight in from the main entrance to Riverside Cemetery.
Tickets, available online through Zeffy or at the Pennyroyal Area Museum, 217 E. Ninth St., are $10 each. The event is free for museum members. Registration online is encouraged.
