Summer Reading kick-off Saturday at Public Library

Saturday's kick-off for the public library's Summer Reading Program will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

If the weather is favorable to outdoor activities, look for a pack of miniature ponies, a rock-climbing wall and some sack races Saturday on the grounds of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library.

The Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library is downtown on Bethel Street at Ninth Street.

Those activities and others are planned for the library’s Summer Reading kick-off event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the event of rain, a scaled down kick-off will be offered indoors, said DeeAnna Sova, the library’s director.

Although the reading program was designed to help prevent academic slide among children during summer vacation, patrons of all ages are eligible to participate.

Participants register and then track their reading time to earn tickets they can use later as chances for 30 prizes. Those include e-readers, tablets, a bicycle and a number of gift cards. Planters Bank is the Summer Reading Program sponsor and helps cover the cost of the prizes.

Everyone who attends the Saturday kick-off will receive a coupon to use at the Kona Ice truck that will be at the library Saturday.

More information about the reading program is available on the library’s website, hccpl.org.

The library, at 1101 Bethel St., is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturdays.
