A free showing of the musical version of “The Color Purple” is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Alhambra Theatre.
The Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library and the Pennyroyal Arts Council are sponsors of the Black History Month event.
The movie is based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award.
Set in the early 20th century in rural Georgia, the story follows Celie, a poor Black woman who is forced into an abusive marriage after her step father rapes her when she is a young teenager. A sister, Nettie, escapes the family and becomes a missionary in Africa but continues trying to reach Celie for decades through letters.
The story follows Celie’s growth as she learns to speak her mind and gains independence late in life.
