Pennyroyal Arts Council is bringing Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ to downtown Hopkinsville

The free performance of "The Tempest," by Kentucky Shakespeare, will be on Sept. 17 at the Hopkinsville Greenway Amphitheater.

A free performance of “Shakespeare in the Park: The Tempest” will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Hopkinsville Greenway Amphitheater adjacent to the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library at Ninth and Bethel streets.

The performance by Kentucky Shakespeare is a Pennyroyal Arts Council smARTS program event.

“The Hopkinsville Greenway Amphitheater, an open-air venue located beside the Hopkinsville-Christian County Library, provides the perfect setting for this timeless production,” an arts council spokeswoman said in a press release. “Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and friends to enjoy this unforgettable performance of one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays.”

“The Tempest” is set on an island near Italy, where Prospero, a magician and former duke of Milan, creates a storm to torment enemies of his in a shipwreck. The play highlights themes of magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness.

In the event of rain, the play will be performed at the Alhambra Theatre, 507 S. Main St.
