Hopkinsville fire chief receives state professional award

The Kentucky Association of Fire Chiefs presented the Career Fire Chief of the Year award to Hopkinsville's Steve Futrell.

Hopkinsville Fire Chief Steve Futrell has been named Career Fire Chief of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Fire Chiefs. The award was presented Wednesday in Bowling Green during the state association’s annual conference.

Several members of Futrell’s staff nominated him for the award, according to a press release from city officials. 

Payton Rogers, public information officer for the Hopkinsville Fire Department, said Futrell has worked to improve the local department in “countless ways.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside Chief Futrell for many years now and no one is more deserving of this award than him. It just reiterates the hard work we’re doing at HFD,” Rogers said.

“Chief Futrell has shown great leadership throughout his career and journey to fire chief. He has proven himself through vision, persistence and dedication to make the Hopkinsville Fire Department a better department,” Deputy Chief Bill Pyle wrote in a letter nominating Futrell.

Futrell was promoted was promoted from deputy chief in September 2019 to lead the department following the retirement of Freddie Montgomery. He has been a Hopkinsville firefighter since 1999.
