Downtown demolition work will affect drivers, pedestrians

The work on South Main Street is expected to continue through March 3.

The demolition of two buildings in the 800 block of South Main Street will cause sidewalk and street closures through March 3, city spokeswoman Nikki Durham said Monday in a press release.

Hopkinsville City Council approved demolition of Lee’s Game Room and the Holland Opera House during a special meeting Thursday, Feb. 17. The buildings were recently condemned for severe structural issues.

Hopkinsville City Council have voted to demolish the building, along with it’s neighbor to the right — the Holland Opera House building and longtime home of Wood’s Drug Store — after a structural engineer deemed them unsafe. Drivers should expect partial closures on South Main Street between Seventh and Ninth streets during the demolition, according to the release.

At times, full closure of the street could be necessary. Pedestrians who normally walk on the sidewalk in front of the two buildings will need to find another path during the demolition. The city will mark detour routes for motorists.
