Youth camp, ‘America at 250: A Journey Through Art,’ slated June 1-5

The Pennyroyal Arts Council camp is open to students in first through 12 grades.

The Pennyroyal Arts Council is accepting registration for a summer art camp that will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary through an exploration of significant artists.

The smARTS Visual Arts Camp for students in first through 12 grades will be June 1-5 in Hopkinsville.

Art teacher Paula Gieseke will lead the camp. The theme is “America at 250: A Journey Through Art.”

The camp will introduce “students to the visionaries who shaped American art. Campers will explore the bold Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring, the expressive realism of Georgia O’Keeffe and Wayne Thiebaud, and the innovative work of Jasper Johns,” the arts council said in a press releases. “Through hands-on instruction and creative exploration, students will develop their own artistic voice while creating original works inspired by these iconic artists.”

Three sessions are available:

  • Session 1 — 8 to 11 a.m. for grades 1-4; $100
  • Session 2 — noon to 3 p.m. for grades 5-12; $100
  • Session 3 — full day, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., grades 5-12; $200

Space is limited; early registration is encouraged. Registration is available online

Half-day campers should bring a snack and water bottle. Full-day campers should bring a snack, water bottle and lunch.

The camp is part of smARTS (students meeting the arts), which provides “accessible arts education and hands-on creative experiences for young people in the community.”
