Transylvania University requiring vaccinations

Transy joins a handful of private colleges requiring the vaccine, including Berea College. So far, no public universities in Kentucky are requiring vaccinations.

Transylvania University is requiring students, faculty, and staff to be vaccinated against coronavirus. The vaccine announcement came in a campus-wide email from the university’s president, Brien Lewis, on Wednesday.

In his correspondence, Lewis said with this week’s news of FDA approval to one of the three vaccines, the university will require all students and employees to be vaccinated by Oct. 13. Classes begin at the private Lexington school Aug. 30.

A two-day COVID vaccine clinic is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 28 and 29 in Transylvania’s William T. Young Campus Center. As previously announced, students, employees, and visitors are required to wear a mask in common and public spaces inside buildings.

Lewis said Transy’s guidelines continue to be based on advice from local, state, and federal public health experts. Transy joins a handful of private colleges requiring the vaccine, including Berea College.

So far, public universities in the commonwealth including the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University are not mandating coronavirus vaccinations for faculty, staff or students.
