In celebration of Dolly Parton, the Pennyroyal Arts Council is inviting the community to a free screening of the movie “Steel Magnolias,” in which Parton played a small-town, Southern beautician, at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, at the Alhambra Theatre. The date is a nod to “9 to 5,” another film starring Parton.
Parton, a country music icon, philanthropist and actor, died Aug. 25 in a Nashville hospital. She was 80.
The arts council will donate 100% of concession proceeds from the evening to the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Children enrolled in the Imagination Library receive a free book every month from birth to age 5.
“Dolly Parton has brought so much joy through her music, acting, and incredible commitment to early childhood literacy,” Margaret Prim, executive director of the arts council, said in a press release. “We are thrilled to open our doors for a fun, nostalgic evening that directly gives back to our local library’s Imagination Library program.”
The Alhambra Theatre will open at 6 p.m., and the movie will begin at 6:30 p.m.
