The school board's recent decision to pivot on the name, colors and mascot of the new consolidated high school was a logical choice — with just one wrinkle, writes Hoptown Chronicle editor Jennifer P. Brown.

In the wake of a controversial video posted to social media by a Hopkinsville Police Department officer, many in the community have called for action and expressed concerns about perceived racist symbols.

During a special meeting, the school board voted to approve construction bids for the consolidated high school and ditched a name it had chosen last year.

Summer Salute will feature rides, family activities, free concerts and more than 100 vendors and food trucks.

Mayor James R. Knight Jr. said the city will be bolstering a sidewalk barrier around the Phoenix during Summer Salute on Friday and Saturday.

The unveiling of a new mural followed by an opportunity to meet the author will kick off events for Hopkinsville's ninth Big Read.

The artifact – housed at the Pennyroyal Area Museum – was once housed outside of the historic Phoenix Building, which is slated for demolition.

The free program is slated Sept. 1 at Hopkinsville Brewing Co.
