Cowan Brooks, the son of Dr. Philip Carruthers Brooks, donated the artifact to the Pennyroyal Area Museum shortly after the death of his father.

The Hopkinsville native's best-known song is “Ice Cream Man,” and it has a backstory worthy of the blues.

The 28th annual African American Heritage Breakfast had 350 guests who heard from keynote speaker Rep. Pamela Stevenson.

The reenactment will be Tuesday, March 5, in Frankfort.

Organizers concluded the campaign with a celebration where several awards were presented.

The stories come from newspaper biographies written by a former Hopkinsville mayor in 1934.

The campaign total will be announced, and awards will be presented at the Feb. 20 finale.

Hopkinsville Community College English professor Elizabeth Burton will teach the workshop, using artifacts as inspiration.

Community members are invited to learn about the religious and secular traditions of the holiday during the program at noon Tuesday.

Following the street dedication on March 1, the Pennyroyal Area Museum will open a newly created bell hooks Community Room.

The events include a 'Midday' program, five workshops and a crafting session.

"You've got to feel [soul food] from the heart," Paulette Robinson told Hoptown Chronicle.
