The director of South Union Shaker Village in Logan County will be in Hopkinsville to speak about the history of whiskey-making by the religious sect — and about a new bourbon the historic site is producing.

The ceremony honoring the co-founder of Kappa Alpha Psi will be June 7 at Founders Square in downtown Hopkinsville.

The June 19 event at Casey Jones Distillery is a fundraiser for the Republican House Majority, according to invitations.

Participants at the Thursday event will be invited to read original poetry, a selection from a favorite author, spoken word or prose.

The public is invited to come for free popcorn and tours of the building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The governor’s request for individual assistance for Christian and Todd counties as well as public assistance for affected cities and counties and hazard mitigation for the entire state are still under review, Beshear’s office said.

The holiday honoring service members who die in the line of duty was first observed as Decoration Day a few years after the Civil War.
