Salvation Army opening up shelter space during cold nights

The agency is also seeking community donations of supplies and financial contributions for the shelter.

In response to colder temperatures in the region, Hopkinsville’s Salvation Army is opening up its White Flag and Extreme Winter Emergency Shelter beginning Tuesday night.

Individuals needing a place for the night can go to 701 S. Clay St. The cold weather shelter will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with sleeping space, blankets, snacks and beverages, and access to restrooms and basic hygiene items.

“Extreme cold can be deadly,” Lt. David Donegan, local corps officer for The Salvation Army, said in a press release. “Our mission is to ensure every person in need has a safe, warm place to stay during hazardous weather. If you or someone you know needs shelter, please come. No one is turned away during White Flag activation.”

The Salvation Army does not provide transportation to the shelter, but first-responders and outreach partners may bring individuals directly to the shelter, officials said.

The agency is also seeking donations of supplies and financial contributions from the community. The Salvation Army needs blankets, hats, gloves, winter coats, hand-warmers and pre-packaged snacks. These can be dropped off at main office at 313 E. Seventh St.
