Registration open for 23rd annual Turkey Trot

The 5K begins at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and attracts hundreds of runners and walkers.

Registration is open for Hopkinsville’s 23rd annual Turkey Trot, the Thanksgiving morning 5K that attracts hundreds of runners and walkers — plus babies in strollers, children in wagons and leashed dogs.

There’s no fee to participate but Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation encourages advance registration so they can plan for the event.

The Turkey Trot begins at 8 a.m. on  Nov. 28. Participates gather in advance at Founders Square in downtown Hopkinsville, and the trot starts on Main Street near Ninth Street.

The early start allows participants to finish in time to get home and prepare their Thanksgiving meal. Former residents in town for the holiday return to Turkey Trot each year to see old friends. In many ways, the event is like a homecoming.

“Dressing up in matching shirts or turkey themed outfits and costumes is one of the elements participants look forward to,” organizers say on the website. “To honor this tradition, we host a costume contest before the race with the winner selected by audience applause.”

Souvenir shirts, for $25, can be ordered with advance registration up until Nov. 15. Additional shirts that are still available will be sold beginning the Monday after Turkey Trot at the Thomas Street Recreation Center. They will not be sold the morning of Turkey Trot.
