Most schools in Hopkinsville to remain closed Wednesday

The region will get a brief mid-week break from the extreme cold but frigid temperatures will return Friday with gusting winds.

Christian County Public Schools, along with Heritage Christian Academy, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School and Hopkinsville Community College, will remain closed Wednesday because of the impact of snow and extreme cold.

Only University Heights Academy announced plans to resume classes.

According to the National Weather Service forecast, Hopkinsville will get a break from the frigid temperatures on Wednesday — but only briefly. Wednesday will be sunny with a high around 31 degrees and Thursday’s high will be slightly above freezing.

Snow is likely Thursday with light accumulation. Then temperatures will plunge again Friday and Saturday with lows in the single digits and winds gusting up to roughly 25 mph.

Sunday’s high will be around 32 degrees — and the temperature will climb to the mid-40s on Monday, providing the first opportunity to melt snow remaining on the ground and on side streets.
