Hopkinsville is under a heat advisory through Tuesday evening

The heat index Monday will be as high as 112 degrees, according to the National Weather Service advisory.

The National Weather Service has issued another heat advisory for Hopkinsville, which is in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The heat index Monday will be as high as 112 degrees, followed by 107 on Tuesday, according to a graphic from the NWS office at Paducah.

Heat illnesses are a concern because of the hot temperatures and high humidity.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the advisory states. “Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

According to safety information the NWS shared in a social media post, individuals who work outdoors should the following precautions:

  • Drink a cup of cool water every 20 minutes, even if you aren’t thirsty. For long, strenuous jobs, drink a beverage with electrolytes.
  • Take regular breaks to rest. During hot conditions, skipping breaks is not safe.
  • Take breaks in the shade or a cool location.
  • Look for any signs of heat illness, including muscle spasms, nausea, dizziness and fainting. When in doubt, call 911.
