Hopkinsville city officials are seeking local residents who will work with law enforcement to form Neighborhood Watch groups to prevent crime and improve neighborhood safety.
There are currently no active Neighborhood Watch organizations in the city, Police Chief Jason Newby told Hoptown Chronicle.
Anyone interested in forming a group may call the police department at 270-890-1522.
“Neighborhood Watch is a proven public safety program that empowers residents to proactively protect their neighborhoods by staying informed, looking out for one another and promptly reporting suspicious activity to police,” states a city press release. “While officers patrol throughout the city, community involvement plays a critical role in preventing crime and helping law enforcement respond more effectively.”
Hopkinsville police will provide training to interested residents, who will learn what types of activities should be reported and how to report them, along with ways neighbors can work together safely and responsibly.
“After completing the training, participating neighborhoods will receive official Neighborhood Watch signs,” the release states. The signs will “serve as a visible reminder that neighbors are engaged, watching out for one another and committed to reporting concerns to police when needed.”
