The second phase of a reconstruction project on Interstate 24 in Christian County begins Thursday, Aug. 27, and is expected to continue until mid-November.
“The first phase of the project was completed earlier this month, and crews have since been preparing the crossover necessary to shift traffic into the second phase of construction,” a spokesman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a press release.
During the second phase, westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane and then cross to the eastbound side of I-24. From there, eastbound and westbound traffic will share the eastbound side while the westbound side is reconstructed.
The new traffic configuration will run from approximately mile point 89 to mile point 85.
“The project involves removing both westbound lanes of I-24 and rebuilding the roadway from the base up,” the release states. “The existing concrete pavement has undergone numerous patches and repairs over the years and has deteriorated to the point that a full reconstruction was determined to be the best long-term solution. The new roadway will be constructed with asphalt pavement.”
State highway officials encouraged motorists to be cautious, reduce speed and allow extra time when traveling through the work zone.
