A National Weather Service heat advisory for the Hopkinsville area is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, July 27. It comes on a the heels of another heat advisory that expired Sunday evening.
The region will continue to experience high temperatures in the 90s for at least several more days, and heat index values will exceed 103 degrees.
The heat index value Monday will be as high as 107 degrees. The index Tuesday will be as high as 105 degrees, according to the NWS forecast.
There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
The heat index value indicates how hot the temperature feels to the human body when the relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.
To avoid heat illness, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids and stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time. Lightweight, loose fitting clothing is recommended.
Heat illness can also affect pets. When outdoors, pets need fresh water in shaded areas. Pets should never be left in a parked vehicle, even with an open window.
