Hopkinsville police officers plan to run the length of Christian County — just over 30 miles — on Wednesday, April 29, to raise awareness and money for Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The run was originally scheduled on Saturday, April 18. However, because of the weather forecast indicating showers and thunderstorms that day, it was reschedule for April 29. All of the event times remain the same, a city official said.
Two runners — Chief Jason Newby and Officer Cory Smith — intend to run the entire distance, and other officers will join them along portions of the run, said Amanda Brunt, the city’s technology and public information director.
The Thin Blue Run will start at 7 a.m. in North Christian near the Hopkins County line. There will be a live video on HPD’s Facebook page.
Community members will have two opportunities to engage with officers during the run.
They can join officers at 10:45 a.m. at HPD headquarters, 101 N. Main St., and walk with the group to Founders Square at Ninth and Main streets. Food booths and bouncers will be set up at Founders Square, and all proceeds will support prevention services dealing with child abuse and sexual assault.
The second chance to meet the running group will be at the end of the event — at 3 p.m. at Valor Hall in Oak Grove.
As of April 6, the effort had already raised $10,000. All of the money contributed through Saturday will be to two Hopkinsville nonprofits — Sanctuary Inc. and Pennryile Children’s Advocacy Center — at Valor Hall.
This story was updated to reflect the new date for the event.
