Salvation Army providing extra shelter options during extreme heat

Expanded hours at the residential shelter and the LifNAV Center, both on Seventh Street, will begin July 24 and continue for two weeks.

The Salvation Army of Hopkinsville is providing additional services to address the extreme heat affecting vulnerable people in the region.

Beginning Thursday, July 24, the residential shelter at Seventh and Liberty streets will operate 24 hours a day for the next two weeks, Lt. David Donegan announced in a press release. This means people currently housed in the shelter will be able to remain there throughout the day and evening. Normally, shelter residents leave in the morning and return later in the afternoon.

“We know the rising heat is a serious threat to our most vulnerable neighbors, especially families with children, seniors, and those without consistent housing,” Donegan said. “While the cost of operating the shelter 24/7 is not currently accounted for in our budget, we know without a doubt that God will make a way. The needs of our community come first.”

In addition to the expanded shelter hours, the Salvation Army’s LifNAV Center, at 310 E. Seventh St., will have extended weekday hours and remain open until 6 p.m. to provide water, cooling and refuge. This building is next door to the residential shelter.

“This is about dignity and compassion,” Donegan said. “We’re seeing families with children trying to spend the day in their cars or public parks because they have nowhere else to go. That’s not acceptable — not on our watch, not in our city.”

Local organization and individuals who want to assist in these efforts through donations, supplies or volunteering should call the agency at 270-885-9633 or visit the website.

According to the National Weather Service forecast, high temperatures in Hopkinsville will be in the mid to upper 90s at least through the end of July.
