Right on the heels of the first day of summer comes a National Weather Service heat advisory for Hopkinsville.
The advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday, June 27. High temperatures across Kentucky, Tennessee and surrounding states will be in the mid-90s, and heat index values will range from 100 to 108 degrees.
As a result of the heat wave, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the power provider for Hopkinsville Electric System and Pennryile Electric, is asking customers to voluntarily reduce usage.
“The first prolonged stretch of heat and humidity of the season will amplify health impacts,” the NWS office at Paducah warns. “Health impacts will build with each successive day in the heat and humidity.”
The heat index value indicates how hot the temperature feels to the human body when the relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.
To avoid heat illness, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids and stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time. Lightweight, loose fitting clothing is recommended.
Heat illness can also affect pets. When outdoors, pets need fresh water in shaded areas. Pets should never be left in a parked vehicle, even with an open window.
