Heavy rain causes concrete failure on Interstate 24

One westbound lane of the interstate is blocked to traffic near the 91 mile marker.

Heavy rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Helene caused a section of concrete pavement to break apart Friday on Interstate 24 in Christian County, a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman said.

“The ground became oversaturated due to heavy rainfall, causing a section of concrete pavement to fail,” Matt Hughes said in a press release.

As a result of the failure, the right westbound lane is blocked to traffic near the 91 mile marker. The blockage is between Exit 89 (at Kentucky 115) and the Kentucky rest stop.

“The right lane will remained closed for an extended period of time,” Hughes said. “Crews plan to make repairs to the damaged area once the weather clears and it is safe to do so.”
