Recent decline in local COVID-19 growth rate offset by third day of more than 20 cases

Wednesday marked the third day in a row that local health officials reported more than 20 new coronavirus cases in a single day.

The Christian County Health Department on Wednesday confirmed 22 new cases of coronavirus, pushing the local total since the pandemic began to 697.

It marked the third day in a row that local health officials reported more than 20 new cases in a single day. In the last three days, the county has confirmed an additional 71 people who tested positive for COVID-19, already exceeding last week’s total by 20.

The recent reports bring the seven-day average of new cases back up to 13, diminishing what appeared last week to be a decrease in coronavirus growth for Christian County.

On Wednesday, the health department also announced the county’s fifth death in the last two weeks attributed to the novel coronavirus. Since the pandemic began in mid-March, the county has had 10 deaths related to COVID-19.

As of Sunday, the county’s positivity rate was 10.34% — nearly double the state’s percentage.

The health department continues to provide free testing at Tie Breaker Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday.

A breakdown of the total local cases by race was also released on Wednesday:

  • Caucasian: 447
  • African American: 193
  • Asian: 5
  • Other: 19
  • Unknown: 33
