The governor also stressed the importance of wearing masks as the state reopens its economy, and encouraged Kentuckians to share social-media posts about why they wear masks and to talk to others about it.

On Jan. 25, 1945, he volunteered to be a forward observer to stop a German attack but had to call in artillery on his own position, offering his life for his country. He survived in a ditch in a French province and later returned home to a Kentucky farm with no electricity or running water.

The documentary, featuring interviews with 60 former residents of Between the Rivers, will run at noon every Thursday, May 21 through July 2.

All retail stores can open Wednesday, and restaurants can have limited openings Friday. Also Friday, gatherings of up to 10 people will also be allowed.

If too many people don't take precautions, the COVID-19 crisis the state has so far avoided could erupt this summer, Dr. Steven Stack said.

Contact tracing is crucial, the governor said, because it's estimated one-fourth of people infected with the coronavirus have no symptoms.

No cheerleaders were dismissed from the program, and there was no financial compensation for the coaches who were fired.

Set for openings this week are government offices, retail stores and restaurants.

The governor says Kentucky is preparing to hire more than 700 people to help with contract tracing.
