The coronavirus pandemic brought major changes to the ways voters could cast ballots. In the past, most voters had to go to their assigned precinct on Election Day. This year, voters could go to any of the seven polls open today, as well as two polls that were open for early voting on 18 days prior to Election Day. State election officials also made it easier for anyone to cast an absentee ballot.

The following voting totals were provided by the Christian County Clerk’s Office.

Voters are encouraged to wear a mask and they should bring photo identification.

Local election officials reported more than 15,000 early and absentee ballots combined through Friday. County Clerk Mike Kem expects the final tally to exceed 25,000.

Business owners should plan to allow employees to work from home next week, if possible, and reschedule, postpone or cancel all events. Community members should not attend — or host — gatherings of any size. They are also asked to reduce in-person shopping and dining, avoid non-essential activities and prioritize businesses that enforce mask mandates and other safety measures.

Despite rising local case numbers, Christian County schools — like some others in the state — have opted to continue in-person learning. It’s a position that local school officials this week maintained.

Anyone needing a test this morning may call the health department.
