Rail-trail pedestrian bridge closed for structural check

Officials closed the bridge Tuesday after cracks on the surrounding stone work were noticed.

The Hopkinsville Greenway pedestrian bridge over LaFayette Road and Country Club Lane was closed Tuesday after “cracks on the surrounding stone work were noticed and reported to the city,” officials said in a press release.

Structural engineers will examine the bridge Wednesday morning, according to the release from Parks and Recreation superintendent Tab Brockman.

“Any decision on reopening the bridge will not be made until city officials meet with structural engineers tomorrow morning.  In the meantime, users are asked to observe barricades and limit trail use to the sections north (Phase I) or south (Phase 2) of the pedestrian bridge,” the release states.

The bridge is approximately 1,400 feet long. It opened in November 2020 with the completion of the second phase of the rail-trail.
