The Pennyroyal Arts Council is accepting applications for the Barbara Gardner Scholarship, which will award $500 each to an educator and a high school student.
The annual scholarship honors the late Barbara Gardner and supports “students and teachers who are advancing access to the arts in their communities,” the arts council said in a press release.
“The scholarship recognizes one Christian County educator and one high school student who are actively engaged in creative projects that foster inclusion, encourage artistic expression, and make a lasting impact through the arts,” the release states. “Each recipient will receive a $500 unrestricted cash award to support their continued work.”
As a self-employed artist, Gardner, of Hopkinsville, taught hundreds of students over a period of 45 years. She died on March 14, 2021, at age 81.
The eligibility requirements for the scholarship are:
- Educators must be currently employed by an accredited institution and reside in Christian County.
- Students must be rising juniors or seniors during the 2026-27 school year in public, private or homeschool programs.
“We believe in the transformative power of the arts, and this scholarship is one of the ways we invest in the next generation of creators and educators,” said Kelly Selfe, arts education coordinator for the arts council. “Barbara Gardner’s legacy reminds us that access and creativity should belong to everyone”.
The application deadline is April 23. The application is available online.
Additional information is available in the press release.
