Phillip Eugene Payne, 89, of Hopkinsville, died on Thursday, March 5, at his home. A native of Crofton, he was a member of the Princeton Street Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and treasurer until his health began to fail. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and he worked for several years as a weekend duty officer for the Earl C. Clemons Job Corps Center. He also was a member of the Ministers and Deacons Laymen League, State Laymen’s League, District Laymen, past Master of the Howe Finley #160, Shriners, NAACP, and a former member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Gamble Funeral Home. It will be preceded by a prayer service at 3 p.m.
