Lawmakers return to Frankfort on Tuesday to write a new state budget, redistrict Kentucky’s political boundaries and consider a slew of bills.

The Kentucky government has provided to school districts only enough funding for half-day kindergarten for decades, despite the fact that most districts offer full-day kindergarten. Districts are expected to use local general funds to cover the remainder of the costs.

When it comes to road construction and maintenance, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has few safeguards to discourage awarding single-bid contracts — which has led to higher costs for taxpayers.

The governor's executive order will allow for increases in nursing school enrollment, permit nurses licensed in other states to work in Kentucky, and provide bonus pay to nurses.
