Monk to give HCC lecture on compassion

The public is invited to hear Tsering Phuntsok on Jan. 31.

The public is invited to hear Buddhist monk Tsering Phuntsok present a lecture, “Transforming Lives: Teaching Compassion,” at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the Emerging Technologies Building at Hopkinsville Community College.

“The  venerable Tsering Phuntsok has been coming almost annually to Kentucky as a speaker and educator since 2010,” Dr. Ken Casey, of HCC, said in a Facebook post. “He has traveled the state speaking at many [Kentucky Community and Technical] colleges as well as other colleges and universities. In that time, he has built a friendship with many Kentuckians and communities across the state. The focus in all his talks is the practice  of compassion.”

Phuntsok has been a practicing monk since 1987, when he entered a monastery at age 16 in Bir, India. He resides in Dharamsala, India, in the foothills of the  Himalayas, a short walk from the temple and residence of the H. H. Dalai Lama.

The talk is part of the series sponsored by the HCC Religion and Philosophy Club. It will be in the Anderson Room. Refreshments will be served.
