Effort underway to map location of private storm shelters

Community and Development Services is asking property owners to identify the location of shelters.

An effort is underway to identify private property storm shelters in Hopkinsville and Christian County so emergency workers are better informed during response to natural disasters and extreme weather events.

“When conducting search and rescue efforts, emergency personnel are better equipped to conduct a more thorough investigation when they are aware of the presence of storm shelters that may not be readily visible,” Rusty Pyle, residential building inspector for Community and Development Services, said in a press release.

Residents may participate in the voluntary program by contacting Pyle through email at rpyle@comdev-services.com or by phoning him at 270-887-4285.

Participants should provide a physical address and a description of the shelter’s location. CDS will map the shelter locations by global positioning system (GPS) so the information is available to emergency personnel.
