The Christian County Health Department on Saturday confirmed five new cases of coronavirus, pushing the local total since the pandemic began to 626.
The county has seen a dip in new cases over the last week, with the seven-day average falling to nine, down from 14 a week ago.
The health department reported 51 new cases this week — nearly half of last week’s total and less than any week in the month of July.
Despite slowing growth, hospitalizations up
While coronavirus growth in Christian County has declined, hospitalizations have recently increased.
As of Friday, there were 12 coronavirus patients hospitalized at Jennie Stuart Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Until this week, the number of COVID-19 patients at Jennie Stuart had remained at 5 or less.
The health department also reported two new deaths this week that were attributed to COVID-19 — a 97-year-old woman and a 93-year-old man. There have been eight coronavirus-related deaths in the county since the pandemic began.
