Children’s theater camp will present ‘Hansel and Gretel’

The Pennyroyal Arts Council works with the Missoula Children's Theatre to offer the camp in mid-July at the Alhambra.

The Pennyroyal Arts Council is preparing for a summer theatre camp with help from the Missoula Children’s Theatre. The camp will run July 12 through 17 at the Alhambra Theatre, and students entering first through 12th grade can register online.

Casting will start at 10 a.m. Monday, July 12, and most of the campers will rehearse from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 13 through 16. They will present “Hansel and Gretel” at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17.

Roles that will be cast include Hansel and Gretel, their Granny, the Wildwood Witch and many supporting roles, according to a news release from the arts council. Some campers will serve as assistant directors to work backstage and help with rehearsals.

“The Pennyroyal Arts Council is no stranger to Missoula productions,” the release states. “In years past, area children have starred in productions of ‘Snow Queen,’ ‘Robin Hood,’ ‘Frog Prince,’ ‘Little Red Riding Hood,’ ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ and more.”

Missoula brings costumes, scenery, props and makeup for its productions. The theater company will travel to 1,200 communities in 17 countries this year, according to the group’s profile.
