Kentucky Agriculture Development Board awards grant to Hopkinsville business

The $3,750 grant was awarded to Hampton Premium Meats.

The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board on Friday approved a $3,750 grant to Hampton Premium Meats, Pembroke Road, Hopkinsville.

The grant is to help pay for “consultation fees for a Global Food Safety Initiative audit, shelf-life consultation for ground beef, and consultation on smoked meats,” states a press release from the Department of Agriculture. 

E.G. “Bummy” Hampton and his son, Ernie, established Hampton Meats in 1975. Ernie Hampton sold the business in October 2021 to Chris Milam and other investors. 

The ag development board meets monthly on the third Friday to consider applications for assistance from the Kentucky Agriculture Development Fund.

“The mission of the board is to invest these funds in innovative proposals that increase net farm income and affect tobacco farmers, tobacco-impacted communities and agriculture across the state by stimulating markets for Kentucky agricultural products,” the board’s website states. “This includes finding new ways to add value to Kentucky agricultural products and exploring new opportunities that will benefit Kentucky farms now and in the future.”

Christian County farmer and agribusinessman Wayne Hunt is one of 11 appointed members who serve on the board. His term runs until July 2026.
