The Pennyroyal Arts Council is accepting registration for a summer art camp that will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary through an exploration of significant artists.
The smARTS Visual Arts Camp for students in first through 12 grades will be June 1-5 in Hopkinsville. Art teacher Paula Gieseke will lead the camp. The theme is “America at 250: A Journey Through Art.”
It is one of three offerings this summer from the arts council for local youth, the arts council said in a press release. Also planned are Mural Art Camp: “Soul Food” and the Missoula Children’s Theatre: Peter and Wendy.
America at 250: A Journey Through Art
The camp will introduce “students to the visionaries who shaped American art. Campers will explore the bold Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring, the expressive realism of Georgia O’Keeffe and Wayne Thiebaud, and the innovative work of Jasper Johns,” the arts council said in a press releases. “Through hands-on instruction and creative exploration, students will develop their own artistic voice while creating original works inspired by these iconic artists.”
Three sessions are available:
- Session 1 — 8 to 11 a.m. for grades 1-4; $100
- Session 2 — noon to 3 p.m. for grades 5-12; $100
- Session 3 — full day, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., grades 5-12; $200
Space is limited; early registration is encouraged. Registration is available online.
Half-day campers should bring a snack and water bottle. Full-day campers should bring a snack, water bottle and lunch.
The camp is part of smARTS (students meeting the arts), which provides “accessible arts education and hands-on creative experiences for young people in the community.”
Mural Art Camp: “Soul Food”
This camp is limited to 10 students in grades 5 through 12 who will work with instructor Mackenzie Russell.
“Inspired by the cubist style of Picasso’s Three Musicians, campers will use professional tools to create a mural celebrating the intersection of the community’s agricultural roots and cultural history,” the press release states.
The camp runs 9 a.m. to noon June 22 to 26. The cost is $100 per student. Registration is available online.
Missoula Children’s Theatre: Peter and Wendy
This camp, running from July 20 to 25, offers rolls for 50 to 60 students to put on a live production at the end of the week on the Alhambra stage.
The production is based on the story of “Peter Pan.” Students are cast for a role on the first day of camp and then spend the week rehearsing for the show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.
Registration is available online. The cost is $100.
This story was updated to include details about additional camp offerings.
