Museum is wrapping up September with a horse-themed gala and three more events

In addition to Juleps, Jockeys & Jazz, the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is hosting History on Tap, a Riverside Cemetery walking tour and Saturday Sleuths, a children's program.

The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County, along with the Hopkinsville History Foundation, will host the second Museum Gala — Juleps, Jockeys & Jazz — Saturday evening downtown at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.

The gala celebrates the 100th anniversary of Christian County-raised thoroughbred colt Flying Ebony’s win in the Kentucky Derby.

Tickets for the gala are $100 per person. The evening will include a catered meal, live music and an art installation inspired by artifacts in the museum collection. The art pieces will be sold during the event’s silent auction.

The gala is one of several events on the museum’s September schedule. Also slated are:

History on Tap

6:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Hopkinsville Brewing Co.

A celebration of author and Hopkinsville native bell hooks’ birthday, this edition of History on Tap will be led by the author’s sister Gwenda Motley and Alissa Keller, the museum executive director. They will discuss the real people, places and events in the memoir “Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood.” Guests to the free program can expect birthday cake, said Keller.

Tree Week Tour

5:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Riverside Cemetery

The museum and the Christian County Master Gardeners will lead an evening stroll at the cemetery to identify trees, discuss the symbolism of historic tombstones and share stories about people laid to rest at Riverside.

The tour group will gather at the Latham Mausoleum for a one-mile stroll lasting about 90 minutes. Tickets, $10 per person, can be purchased online or in person at Pennyroyal Area Museum, 217 E. Ninth St.

Saturday Sleuths

10:30 a.m., Sept. 27, Pennyroyal Area Museum

Saturday Sleuths for children ages 6 to 12 invites participants to “become detectives and help solve a history mystery” on the last Saturday of every month. This month it is The Arboreal Adventure. With help from the Christian County Master Gardeners, students will learn about trees in the area, many of which will be changing colors. The program is free for museum members and $3 for everyone else.
