Trail of Tears Pow Wow is Sept. 6-7 in Hopkinsville

The pow wow features dance and drum contests and numerous other Native American cultural performances at the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park.

The 38th annual Trail of Tears Pow Wow is planned on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park, 1730 E. Ninth St.

The pow wow features dance and drum contests and numerous cultural performances, including flute-playing, storytelling and sacred songs.

Vendors will have fry bread, Indian tacos, buffalo burgers, crafts and Native American art.

On both days, gates open at 10 a.m. and grand entries begin at 1 p.m. A sensory-friendly environment will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 7 to 12 and free for children 6 and younger. Parking is free.

The Trail of Tears Commemorative Park is on the site of a winter camp and ration stop during the forced removal of Native Americans in 1838-39 from the Southeastern U.S. to the West.

Two Cherokee leaders, Fly Smith and Whitepath, died during their time in Hopkinsville — and their graves are marked at the commemorative park. A heritage center located in a log house near the graves has exhibits and artifacts related to the Trail of Tears.

The Trail of Tears is a National Historic Trail that passes through several states.
