bell hooks Book Club studying ‘All About Love’

The book club, open to anyone interested discussing bell hooks' writing, will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 19.

The next gathering of the bell hooks Book Club is set for 6 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the Pennyroyal Area Museum, 217 E. Ninth St., with a focus on chapters 1 and 2 of “All About Love: New Visions.”

The book club is open to anyone interested in learning more about the works of Hopkinsville native Gloria Jean Watkins. She wrote under the pen name bell hooks, which was inspired by her great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. She died on Dec. 15, 2021, at age 69, having published more than 40 books.

Currently, the book club is exploring “All About Love” in small increments rather than the entire book in one setting. The book is an exploration of what causes a polarized society and how to heal divisions.

Twenty-six years after it was first published, “All About Love,” is ranked 11th on the New York Times Best Sellers list for paperback nonfiction. It has been on the list for 151 weeks.

Copies of the book are available to purchase in The Vault by Planters Bank Museum Shop, online through the museum’s Shopify store or from other book sellers. It is also available to check out from the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library

The book club is sponsored by the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County, Hoptown Chronicle, the Christian County Literacy Council and the bell hooks Legacy Group.
