Christian County’s 13 voting centers closed at 6 p.m. Tuesday, concluding the 2023 general election.
In two local races on the ballot, Republican Maureen Leamy was elected commonwealth’s attorney and District 4 school board incumbent Rebecca Pepper held on to her seat. Both were being challenged by write-in candidates.
Less than 24% of the county’s 50,648 voters showed up to the polls. Turnout statewide was approximately 37%.
Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear won the election against his Republican challenger, Attorney General Daniel Cameron, with 53% to Cameron’s 47% of the vote statewide. Locally, Cameron was the favorite. Only 43% of Christian County voters cast their ballots for Beshear.
In the final week, Beshear and Cameron both campaigned in Christian County. Cameron’s popularity in Hopkinsville was indicated in the last campaign finance report prior to voting. The Republican had received $55,562 in contributions from residents in the 42240 Zip code, compared to $20,435 for Beshear.
The Christian County Clerk’s Office reported local tallies at about 9:15 p.m. — one of the last counties in the commonwealth to do so. In a shift from previous elections, the Christian County Board of Elections decided to not make partial totals available as ballots were being tallied, according to County Clerk Melinda Humphries.
Humphries told Hoptown Chronicle that the Board of Elections anticipated more write-in ballots in this election because two candidates — Caleb Ballard in the school board race and Stephanie Bolen in the prosecutor’s race — campaigned after filing paperwork to ensure their votes would be counted. She wanted members of the election board and staff to be able to focus on that task without having to stop and post partial returns.
“I know this is kind of different for us, but I’d rather get it right first with all these write-ins,” she said.
Although local election officials counted substantially more write-in ballots than they typically see, neither of the write-in hopefuls came close to securing a victory.
In the race for commonwealth’s attorney, Leamy had 8,648 votes to Bolen’s 911. Leamy is an assistant county attorney. Bolen is currently serving as commonwealth’s attorney. She was appointed by the governor after Ricking Boling resigned in February so he would not have to face a General Assembly-led impeachment panel.
In the school board race, Pepper had 890 vote to 248 for Ballard. The school board selected Pepper for her seat in December to fill the unexpired term of Mike Walker, who resigned.
