Training set for new volunteers sought to visit with local seniors

A Friendly Visitor class is set for Jan. 9 at PADD's Hopkinsville office.

A program that aims to recruit people who will regularly visit with seniors in local nursing and assisted living homes has planned a new training session.

The Pennyrile Ombudsman program will host a Friendly Visitor class from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Pennyrile Area Development District office, 300 Hammond Drive, Hopkinsville.

PADD employee Cindy Tabor said volunteers are asked to visit a senior one hour a week. The volunteers can become advocates for seniors, filling a gap for those who don’t have family in the area who check in on them.

“It only takes an hour to give back to seniors. … In just one hour you can visit someone living in an institutional setting and listen to their story,” Tabor said in a press release.

Anyone planning to attend the Jan. 9 session is asked to RSVP by contacting Tabor at 270-886-9484, or through email at cindy.tabor@ky.gov.
