Take Kids Fishing is May 28 at Hopkinsville’s Jeffers Bend Environmental Center

Cash prizes will be awarded in several categories for fishers ranging from 3 to 15 years of age.

Take Kids Fishing, one of the most popular annual events at Jeffers Bend Environmental Center, 1170 Metcalfe Lane, is slated for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 28.

Organizers are planning for 650 children and 550 adults to participate. It’s sponsored by the North Fork of Little River Committee and the Pennyrile Resource, Conservation and Development Area Council.

Children in four age groups — 3-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-15 — will compete for cash prizes in categories for smallest, longest and most fish caught. The same age groups will compete in a casting and reeling contest for longest cast and quickest reel time.

Families are asked to bring fishing poles if they have them. A limited number of loaners will be available at Jeffers Bend.

The registration fee is $2 per person by May 23 or $3 on the day of the event. Advance registration can be completed at Aaron McNeil House, the Thomas Street Recreation Department, Boys and Girls Club, Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority, Housing Authority of Hopkinsville, Woodland Heights Apartments and Hopkinsville Electric Service.

Registration is free for military and first-responder families with identification.

Children will receive a free T-shirt, and a hot dog lunch will be provided to everyone who attends.
