Hopkinsville’s First Presbyterian Church brought a touch of Scotland to Main Street with its Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan service.

Postell was enslaved in Christian County when he fled during the Civil War to join the Union Army, then returned after the war and became a wealthy business owner.

Christian Circuit Judge Andrew Self, who gave the keynote address for the Human Rights Commission, shared the message from the Parable of the Good Samaritan as community members honored several civic leaders for their good works.

The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan service, a Scottish-American tradition with bagpipe music, begins at 11 a.m. at the Hopkinsville church.

Former sportswriter Ray Duckworth still recalls the advice of a local coach who once told him, "Football is the best teacher of life because when you get knocked down, you either get back up or you get run over."

Princeton Road at Seventh Street will be blocked through Oct. 24.

"Hopkinsvillians in 1913 cherished the building, not just because of its entertainment potential but because of its beauty. It was a testament to what a group of people in Hopkinsville could achieve when they united for a single cause," writes columnist Grace Abernethy.

Each tour, one at 4:30 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m., will last about 90 minutes. The two groups will share a catered supper in the cemetery at 6 p.m.

The city needs “policies that protect the architectural integrity and visual appeal” of downtown, writes Chamber of Commerce President Taylor Hayes.

Preservationist Grace Abernethy will give the program, "Opening Night at The Rex."

Saturday's rally attracted approximately 225 protesters, including several from neighboring communities, who brought American flags and hand-made signs.

Both races begin at the Christian County Justice Center with the half marathon entrants starting at 8 a.m. and the 5K runners at 8:20 a.m.
