St. Elmo supporters selling tickets for July 20 barbecue

The barbecue raises money to help preserve the St. Elmo schoolhouse on Bradshaw Road.

The St. Elmo Homemakers Club is hosting its summer barbecue — a South Christian tradition that was revived in 2022 after an absence of several years — from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at the St. Elmo schoolhouse on Bradshaw Road.

Tickets are $15 for a barbecue plate, drink and dessert. The Bar-B-Q Shack on Pembroke Road will cater the meal.

The proceeds go to help preserve the schoolhouse. The homemakers club owns and maintain the school, which was in operation from 1868 to 1949.

The annual barbecue had a 65-year run through 2017, but was suspended in 2018 as the homemakers club membership dwindled. It was revived last year with a larger club, including several young members interested in saving the school building that had fallen into disrepair.

Tickets for the barbecue are available by contacting club members, including Kathleen Carter, 270-348-3086, and Mona Bolinger, 270-348-3448.

Donation checks for the school fund should be made payable to Friends of St. Elmo Inc.
