Severe weather in Thursday forecast; tornado watch issued

The National Weather Service said the region could see damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes.

(UPDATE: Most of Western Kentucky, including Hopkinsville, is under a tornado watch until 11 p.m. Thursday. A watch means conditions favor thunderstorms that are capable of producing tornadoes.)

Severe weather is forecast in Hopkinsville, and the region will be under a wind advisory from 7 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

“A chance of thunderstorms is forecast through the day and into the early evening,” the NWS office at Paducah stated. “Severe storms will be possible throughout the region in the late afternoon and early evening, but the threat will be greatest over west Kentucky. Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes will all be possible.”

Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, are expected, according to the forecast.

Residents should secure outdoor objects that could be impacted, and motorists should be cautious, especially when driving high-profile vehicles, the NWS warned.
