Hopkinsville’s Salvation Army will open its soup kitchen for additional hours this weekend to help people who need a safe place during the extreme heat and humidity.
The soup kitchen, on Eighth Street between Clay and Liberty streets, will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Mayor Carter Hendricks’ office announced.
Salvation Army will provide lunch as well as snacks and cold water throughout the day.
The extra hours are part of the extreme weather event program, or EWE, provided by the Salvation Army and city government.
On a regular basis, the air-conditioned Salvation Army office lobby on Seventh Street is also open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for anyone wanting to escape the heat.
Volunteers and donations are encouraged, according to the mayor’s office. For more information contact the Salvation Army at 885-9633.
Hopkinsville and the surrounding region are under an extreme heat warning advisory. The National Weather Service forecast calls for heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees this weekend.
