A holiday shopping guide that is uniquely Hopkinsville

Here’s the holiday shopping guide that celebrates the unique style of Hopkinsville (and makes life a little easier for last-minute shoppers)

You already know that shopping local helps our community’s locally-owned businesses and nonprofits. But it’s also a good thing for shoppers — especially those who need to get their gifts quickly. For the third consecutive year, Hoptown Chronicle has ideas for gifts that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere but Hopkinsville.

View-Master
Hopkinsville View-Masters
$28 for the View-Master; $18 for the 3-D reel

Remember that classic holiday toy, the View-Master and its 3-D photo reels? Now you can get one made just for the Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County that features old Christmas scenes, including some from the collection of historian William T. Turner. The museum plans to offer more reels with additional historic images in the years to come. Purchase online or at The Vault by Planters Bank gift shop at Pennyrile Area Museum, 217 E. Ninth St.

Alhambra-Ale
Alhambra Ale
$18 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans

Just in time for the holidays, Hopkinsville Brewing Company has released a new beer that celebrates the history of the city’s iconic Alhambra Theatre. The Alhambra Ale is a British session ale. Brewer Kate Russell says it is “both refreshing and flavorful … and lightly malty with notes of caramel and toffee.” It’s available by the four-pack at HBC, 102 E. Fifth St., and by the can at the Alhambra during concerts and movies.

Imelda-with-Mouse
Imelda Mouse
$20 for Imelda plush toy and cartoon

There’s a new mouse in the house, following in the tradition set by Alhambra Theatre mascots Butch and Ruby. The new mouse is Imelda, inspired by longtime patron of Hopkinsville arts Imelda Gorman. This creature has a story to tell in an original cartoon about the landmark downtown theater building. The proceeds from this item support the work of the Pennyroyal Arts Council. Purchase online or at the Alhambra Theatre gift shop, 507 S. Main St.

batter-capital-skillet
Batter Capital Skillet
$29.99

As the self-proclaimed Batter Capital of the World (a nod to Christian County’s milling industries and the grains grown on local farms), the Hopkinsville Visitor Center, 1730 E. Ninth St., sells Lodge cast iron skillets branded with the community’s claim to fame. You’ll also find other gifts unique to Hopkinsville in the center’s gift shop.

Coconut-cake
Coconut Cake
$28

You might not know it from this diner’s name, but Holiday Burgers, 3806 Lafayette Road, prepares special orders, including cakes and pies. One of their best is a three-layer coconut cake — a dessert that is a favorite on many Southern tables for the holidays. Here’s a menu of all the special order cakes and pieces from the diner. Orders can be placed over the phone by calling (270) 886-7495. Plan to allow 36 hours for most requests.

Hopkinsville-ornament
Clock Tower Ornament
$22

One of Hopkinsville’s most iconic landmarks is among the designs adorning custom-made ornaments from The COllective 270, a locally based Etsy shop. The ornament, along with other Hopkinsville-themed designs, is available at The Mixer, The Studio 3s, The Vault gift shop at Pennyroyal Area Museum and the Hopkinsville Visitor Center.

Hoptown-Hoppers-ornament
Hoppers Ornament
$10

The one-and-only Hoptown Hoppers baseball team now has its own Christmas tree ornament. They are available online and at J. Schrecker Jewelry, 909 S. Main St. The proceeds support the summer league team. The Hoppers are one of Hopkinsville’s oldest sporting traditions. The team was part of the old Kitty League from 1903 to 1955, then returned in 2012 as a summer collegiate program in the Ohio Valley League. J. Schrecker Jewelry,

Baked-2
Treats from Baked & The Apron Wife
Varies

The Apron Wife, 110 E. 6th St., is a gift shop that also sells fresh flowers and charcuterie and offers event planning. It shares space with Baked, a new venture of The Mixer restaurant next door. Baked has creative confections like the S’mores puff pastry, along with breads, cookies and cakes. The offerings in both businesses can change from day to day — it’s the kind of place a shopper needs to experience first-hand.

Book-Nook
Book It
Varies
Hopkinsville’s last bookstore closed two years ago — but there’s an excellent alternative at The Corner Coffeehouse, where the owners curate a smart selection of novels, literature and non-fiction titles. The selection changes often, so it’s not hard to find something for the reader on your gift list. The coffeehouse is also one of the best places in town to read, which means a gift card tucked into a gently used book would make an inspired gift at Christmas.
