Derby officials initially wanted to have some fans in attendance for the most exciting two minutes in sports, the steady increase of coronavirus cases in Louisville and Kentucky prevented that from happening.

Beshear reported 807 news cases of the coronavirus Tuesday, 150 of those were in children under 18 and of those, 50 were 17 or 18. The youngest was only 27 days old. 

The total number of local cases includes 220 classified as active and 660 classified as recovered.

Christian County was among 14 counties in the White House Coronavirus Task Force report's "red zone," where new cases of the virus numbered more than one per 1,000 residents and the share of residents who tested positive during the week was over 10%.

Among the new cases, there were 43 children ages 18 and younger.

Weather permitting, testing will resume Wednesday at Tie Breaker Park.

The county health director also announced Monday that 16 new coronavirus cases were confirmed.

Beshear reported 462 new coronavirus cases and nine more COVID-19 deaths, raising the state's death toll to 930.

Ahead of Kentucky Derby Week, the state health commissioner urged people to consider how they will celebrate. He said previous holiday celebrations, and the outcomes, are reasons to be cautious.

As of Saturday afternoon, the number of active cases in the county was 223, according to the health department.

The state's daily K-12 school report shows 14 more students and nine more staff have tested positive for the virus, with 99 students  and 40 staff having active cases. 

Since the pandemic began, 869 people in Christian County have tested positive for COVID-19.
